De Hemel brews its own beer inside a former Dominican monastery on Franseplaats and serves it in the same complex. The building does a great deal of the work — vaulted stone, a courtyard, a brewery installed where an order once lived — but the beers hold up independently of the setting. The kitchen keeps to substantial Dutch cooking meant to be drunk alongside rather than studied, at around €20 a plate. Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands, and this is the most direct way to eat and drink inside that history without it turning into a museum visit. Locals bring visiting friends here first, for good reason.
