Café De Blauwe Hand
Nijmegen, Netherlands
The read// why locals go
De Blauwe Hand is a Nijmegen brown café in the strictest sense: dark wood, jenever poured from the barrel, and a corner of the Grote Markt held since 1903. Brown cafés take their name from decades of smoke and varnish, and this one has the patina to prove the claim. Grolsch comes cold on tap, and the food does not pretend to be more than borrelhapjes to line a drink — around €9 will do it. The room mixes pensioners who have been coming for generations with students who found it last term, sharing tables without much ceremony. It is the least self-conscious drinking room in the city centre.
