Mangal 1
London, United Kingdom
The read// why locals go
Mangal 1 is the original Dalston ocakbasi — a Turkish charcoal grill on Arcola Street that has been cooking over open fire since 1994. An ocakbasi is defined by that grill: a long charcoal pit at the front of the room, meat cooked in full view, smoke drawn up above it. Lamb shish, beyti and lahmacun are the backbone of the menu, with mains around £16. There is no alcohol licence, so bring your own; cash is preferred, and there are tables outside in warm weather. The smell of charcoal reaching the street is the only advertising it has ever needed.
