Schrøder
Oslo, Norway
The read// why locals go
Schrøder has served Norwegian home cooking on Waldemar Thranes gate since 1952 and has resisted every improvement offered since. A kro is a tavern in the plainest sense, and this one holds the line: lapskaus, kjøttkaker, pickled herring, and a daily special that remains the best-value plate for some distance around. The fittings are dated because nobody has made a convincing case for changing them. Regulars occupy the same seats for hours, service is brisk without being unfriendly, and the whole operation runs on the assumption that people come for the food and the sitting rather than the surroundings. Old Oslo, still entirely functional.
