El Huequito
Mexico City, Mexico
The read// why locals go
El Huequito has been carving tacos al pastor from the spinning vertical spit since 1959, which makes it the oldest al pastor counter in Mexico City. The format has never needed updating: marinated pork shaved to order, small tortillas, a queue that moves fast because nobody is choosing between many things. Tacos come in around MXN 45, cheap enough to eat standing and order again, and the name, meaning roughly the little gap, still describes the scale of the original spot. This is the reference point that later taquerias in the city were measured against.
