The read// why locals go

Le Bar de la Marine faces the water on Quai de Rive-Neuve, the Marseille bar Marcel Pagnol used as the setting for his Marius trilogy. The literary connection is real and the bar has never traded too heavily on it: it functions as a Vieux-Port cafe, with a terrace pointed at the boats. The food is simple Provencal bar food and prices stay low at around EUR 12, because most people are here for a pastis, a coffee, or an hour of watching the port. It is one of the few places on the quay where locals and visitors mix without either feeling out of place. Best in the late afternoon, when the light comes off the water.
