Café de la Peña is a small Colombian café in La Candelaria, Bogotá, serving tinto and traditional breakfasts in the historic centre. La Candelaria is the colonial core — steep streets, painted facades, university buildings — and the café functions as its morning canteen. The plates are the ones Bogotá has always eaten before work: changua, the milk-and-egg soup; calentado, yesterday's rice and beans returned to the pan; arepas, with strong black coffee behind them. Students and workers from the surrounding blocks make up most of the room. Around 12,000 pesos, a few tables on the pavement, and no interest in dressing any of it up.
