   A breakfast and lunch kitchen in the Fortune Block on Main Street, named for the restaurant that stood in the same room a century ago. The original Modern Electric Lunch of the 1920s claimed the first electric refrigerator in a Winnipeg restaurant; the current one found the old receipts during renovations and took the name. What arrives on the plate leans east of what the sign suggests — Palestinian breakfast, Turkish eggs, eggplant shakshuka, sumac chicken fatteh, a kofta pita — alongside strawberry rhubarb pancakes, a pastrami sandwich and a Cubano. Coffee is chosen with the same care as the food. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-friendly versions come on request.

   Cafe

   FrenchWay Cafe & Bakery

   A French café and bakery on Lilac Street where Larissa Webster and chef Olivier Fortat have been baking and cooking since 2008. FrenchWay sits just off the Corydon strip, and it does the two things a neighbourhood café should do properly: bread and pastry out of its own ovens, and a short board of home-cooked food to sit down to. Crêpes, the soup of the day and a rotation of salads carry the savoury side, with vegan and gluten-free versions built into the card rather than bolted on. There is a proper dining room, a patio when the weather allows, and the kitchen runs on its own schedule alongside the counter.

   Bonnie Day

   A small candlelit room on Westminster Avenue in Wolseley, cooking comfort food that happens to suit almost everyone at the table. Bonnie Day opened in 2021 in the space Winnipeggers knew as the Ruby West, with chef Pamela Kirkpatrick running a kitchen that works two shifts: a café through the daytime, a proper resto in the evening. The plates people come back for are the whipped feta, hand-rolled sweet potato gnocchi in lemon cream, the pizzas and the vegan galette, with a natural wine list kept short and personal. The name nods to the owners' Scottish heritage and, said aloud, to the French for good idea. The room is small — book ahead.
