Ruth and Dean
Victoria, Canada
The read// why locals go
Ruth and Dean is a bakery-luncheonette in Oak Bay, Victoria, where cakes are made daily and lunch means soup, meltie sandwiches and housemade biscuits. Susannah Bryan opened the first Ruth and Dean on Douglas Street in downtown Victoria in September 2015, before the shop settled onto Estevan Avenue in the heart of Oak Bay. The kitchen has held to one idea since: food that is, in the shop's own words, approachable and nostalgic. That reads as buttermilk biscuits with preserves, a ham meltie with Gruyere, pickles and apricot preserves, chicken noodle soup finished with gremolata. Cakes rotate by flavour and go by the slice or whole, and Monogram Coffee, the Canadian roaster, is poured alongside. Sandwiches land around CA$18, and the vegan, gluten-free Bounty Bowl of tofu, broccoli, quinoa and greens keeps plant-based eaters covered.
