Nohra Thai Kitchen
Victoria, Canada
The read// why locals go
At Nohra Thai Kitchen the southern half of Thailand does the cooking, in a small Oak Bay room on Estevan Avenue. Kua-kling arrives as zingy turmeric-spiced minced chicken; gaeng som is the sour-hot southern curry, sharpened with green papaya and shrimp paste; and the pad thai is a Chai Ya version built on coconut milk and a house-made paste rather than the usual tamarind. Phuket-style wok noodles come under a basted egg and crispy shallots. Chef specials push further out, to massaman lamb shanks served with roti and pan-fried cod under crispy basil, while most curries and stir-fries stay around sixteen dollars. Reservations are worth making, particularly for the chef's table evenings and their off-menu dishes.
