The read// why locals go

Glasgow's Café Gandolfi has held its corner of Albion Street since 1979, serving Scottish and European food in a room of hand-carved oak. The furniture is the signature: Tim Stead's massive, organic tables and chairs, commissioned when the café opened and now as much a part of the city's design history as of its restaurant history. The cooking has stayed on the same steady line for four decades — Scottish ingredients, European technique, from morning plates through to dinner, mains around £20 — which is why generations of the Merchant City treat it as their default. Nothing here chases a trend. It is one of the few Glasgow rooms people who left the city still name first when they come back.
