Casa Montaña
Valencia, Spain
The read// why locals go
Casa Montaña is a taberna in El Cabanyal, Valencia's old fishermen's quarter, where the wine is treated with the seriousness usually reserved for the food. El Cabanyal is a grid of low houses behind the beach, its façades still tiled in the colours the fishing families chose, and it has spent the last decade being rediscovered. The taberna format here is the classic Valencian one: wine poured from the barrel, tinned seafood and cured goods treated as delicacies rather than stopgaps, small plates ordered as the evening goes. Mains run around €22. The kind of room where the wine list is the reason to stay a second hour.
