Bar Palentino is a Castilian bar on Calle de la Palma in Madrid's Malasana, the kind of counter locals eat at rather than sit down in. It has become one of the barrio's fixed points: a narrow room, a long bar, and plates of Castilian bar food passed across it from early morning onwards. Nothing about it has been styled. The appeal is the pace, the regulars, and a bill that rarely climbs past EUR 12. Malasana has changed enormously around it and Palentino has changed almost not at all, which is precisely why people keep coming. Go for breakfast at the counter, or as a stop between other places nearby.
