The read// why locals go

La Cova Fumada is the Barceloneta bar credited with inventing the bomba — a fried ball of potato and meat under aioli and hot sauce, now served across Barcelona and rarely as well as here. There is no sign on the door, no reservations and no card machine, which has kept the room closer to a fishermen's bar than a destination. Chickpeas, grilled vegetables and whatever the market sent fill out a short menu around it, at roughly €16 a head. Finding the place is part of the exercise: look for the unmarked door near the market on Carrer del Baluard.
