Biesmiellah
Cape Town, South Africa
The read// why locals go
Biesmiellah has cooked Cape Malay food on Upper Wale Street since 1986, in the heart of the Bo-Kaap where the cuisine took shape. Denningvleis, bobotie and samosas come from recipes carried through generations of the Bo-Kaap community, a culinary line running back some 350 years to the Cape's Malay and Indonesian arrivals. The cooking is sweet-spiced rather than fiery, and the kitchen has never seen a reason to modernise it. Lunch is the service that matters, at around R120, in a corner of the city where the painted houses draw photographers and the food draws everyone else.
