The read// why locals go

Caru' cu Bere is the most photographed dining room in Bucharest, a neo-Gothic beer house from 1879 with stained glass, carved wood and painted vaulting. It stands on Stavropoleos beside the monastery of the same name, in the middle of the old town, and has been serving Romanian food more or less continuously ever since. The menu is the national canon done at volume: sarmale, sour tripe soup, grilled mici, plates around 35 lei. Yes, it appears on every visitor's list, but it is also where Bucharest families still book for a birthday, which is the more telling recommendation. Go for the room, which genuinely deserves the attention, and order the classics.
