The read// why locals go

Café 't Smalle has been pouring in the Jordaan since 1786, when it opened as the tasting house of a jenever distillery. The room still shows it: leaded glass, a small dark bar, brass and wood worn smooth by two and a half centuries of elbows. The canalside terrace, reached by a few steps down to the water, is one of the most sought-after handfuls of tables in Amsterdam and takes some patience in summer. Drinks and simple bites run around €10. Jenever is the historically correct order here, and it is still served properly.
