The read// why locals go

Café Papeneiland stands at Prinsengracht 2, on the corner where two of Amsterdam's canals meet, and has been open since 1642. It is among the oldest bars in the city and still very small: Delft tiles, a stove, a steep stair, a handful of tables by windows onto the water. The name — Papists' Island — recalls the era of clandestine Catholic worship in the Jordaan. Apple pie has become the thing people cross town for, and a drink runs around €9. Open through the day, and best in the quiet hours before the evening fills it.

Good to know

PriceTypical main course around €9, ordered à la carte.
