Osteria della Mattonella
Naples, Italy
The read// why locals go
Osteria della Mattonella began as a wine and oil shop on Via Giovanni Nicotera and has been cooking for the same Naples families since 1948. Giuseppe Marangio — Don Peppino — turned the shop into an osteria, and the family still runs it on the two principles they state themselves: honest dishes and care for whoever sits down. The kitchen holds to the Neapolitan canon that most restaurants no longer attempt properly, including sartù di riso, pasta alla genovese, sausage with friarielli and octopus alla Luciana. Tiled walls give the room its name and its sense of belonging to an earlier decade. Mains land around €22, which is part of why locals still fill it.
