Stövchen
Karlsruhe, Germany
The read// why locals go
Stövchen is a Karlsruhe Gaststätte of the old school on Waldstraße, named for the green tiled stove that anchors its room of enamel advertising signs. The kitchen cooks the Baden and Swabian canon without irony: breaded schnitzel and Cordon Bleu, Maultaschen, cheese spätzle, pulled pork, loaded baked potatoes and salads big enough to be dinner, with weekly specials around thirteen euros. Nothing on the card climbs far past fifteen, and the portions assume you came hungry. In summer the beer garden opens behind the house and the same plates come out under the trees, which is when locals stop calling it a pub and start calling it their canteen.
