La Rose began as a small shop, and only became a restaurant because its customers kept asking for falafel. Abu Said, born in Damascus in 1962, spent eleven years working at a spice mill before opening on Akademiestraße in 2003, and the Syrian cooking he has served there since carries that background plainly: warm spice, slow-cooked meat dishes, an unusually deep vegetarian and vegan half of the menu, and baklava made in-house rather than bought in. The dining room is the heart of it — a takeaway branch on Kaiserstraße ran from 2022 to 2024 and has closed, leaving one address, one kitchen and more than two decades of regulars.
