The read// why locals go

La Cantine de Babelville is a solidarity canteen in Paris's 11th, serving homemade family cooking with a West African accent at prices anyone can meet. Set up in 2017 by La Coop Mijotée on Rue de la Fontaine au Roi, next door to a residence for migrant workers, it runs on two tariffs: a small-budget rate for the general public and a lower social rate for people who need it, with the first quietly paying for the second. The kitchen is staffed on the same principle. Recently arrived migrants, political refugees and the long-term unemployed are hired on insertion contracts with professional and social support behind them, and around seventy people have come through since it opened. The food is straightforward, cooked from scratch, and respects what people actually eat.
