Café du Port is a plain riverside café on the Quai Sainte-Croix in Bordeaux, feeding whoever happens to be working nearby. The Garonne is metres away and the oysters come from the Arcachon basin, delivered each morning — about the shortest supply chain a Bordeaux plate can manage. Beyond that it is a chalkboard operation: the plat du jour, around €11, changes with what the kitchen bought, and the outside tables fill with dock workers, students and neighbourhood regulars in roughly equal measure. Nothing about the room has been designed. It is the honest, cheap lunch a city famous for expensive wine still needs.
