The read// why locals go

El Fishawy has been serving mint tea in the lanes of Khan el-Khalili since 1773, which makes it the oldest café still working in Cairo. The setting is a narrow alley beside the al-Hussein mosque, lined with tall antique mirrors and worked brass, where the tables spill into the walkway and the traffic of the bazaar goes straight past your elbow. Tea, Turkish coffee, hibiscus and shisha, with a few pounds covering a long sit. Naguib Mahfouz wrote here, and the café appears in the Cairo he described. It is famous and it is busy, but it is still where Cairenes come to argue and play backgammon rather than a reconstruction staged for visitors.
