Chez José

The read// why locals go
For more than thirty years this tiny Plateau room on Avenue Duluth has been feeding the neighbourhood Portuguese home cooking. The kitchen is unfussy and personal — a churrasco sandwich, crêpes, a vegan breakfast plate, smoothies pressed to order — and the pastéis de nata have been coming out of the same oven for three decades. On Fridays and Saturdays there is seafood soup, a standing appointment regulars plan around. The family's next generation runs it now. The room is small enough that you will likely share it with people who have been coming since the first generation cooked here, there are a few seats outside when the street fills up, and prices stay in the teens and low twenties.
