Confeitaria Colombo
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The read// why locals go
Confeitaria Colombo has occupied its Belle Époque room on Rua Gonçalves Dias since 1894 and remains the grandest thing in central Rio. The interior is the attraction and it is genuinely spectacular: enormous Belgian crystal mirrors, jacaranda counters, stained glass over the hall. It works as patisserie and café at once — sweet pastries, the savoury salgadinhos Brazil runs on, and a full afternoon tea upstairs. Around R$55, which buys the room as much as the plate. Cariocas use it for occasions and for ordinary coffee alike, and it opens early enough to be a proper breakfast stop. More than a century on, nothing else in the centre comes close for atmosphere.
