East Side Story
Namur, Belgium
The read// why locals go
Nerymen and Gaby left Aleppo and Palmyra and now cook Syrian mezze to order in a small room on Namur's Rue de la Croix. Everything on the card is vegetarian: hummus, moutabal, mouhammara, halloumi and falafel that are fried when the order comes in rather than held warm. The couple keep the list short and send plates out as each one is finished, so a table fills gradually with small dishes meant to be shared. The room sits in the old town near the Musée Félicien Rops, dressed in Middle Eastern pieces, with a few tables out front in warm weather. Sandwiches cover a quick lunch, but this is a sit-down kitchen first, and one of the centre's best-loved small ones.
