Brasserie De Schelde
Dendermonde, Belgium
The read// why locals go
Dendermonde grew up where the Dender meets the Scheldt, and Brasserie De Schelde takes its name and its terrace from the larger of the two rivers. Belgian brasserie cooking is a robust tradition — beef braised in beer, mashed vegetable stoemp, mussels when the season allows — served at around €17 a main, which in this part of East Flanders buys a full plate rather than a modest one. The outdoor tables are the summer draw, on a stretch of water that most people passing through the region never see. Central, generous and firmly Flemish, on the Keizerlijk Plein in the middle of town.
