Le Châtelain Market
Brussels, Belgium
The read// why locals go
The Châtelain market turns a leafy Ixelles square into the most sociable open-air food hall in Brussels, with producers, oyster stalls and a glass of wine in hand. Belgian growers and makers set up around the Place du Châtelain with cheese, charcuterie, bread and vegetables, alongside enough cooked food, much of it vegetarian, to make a meal rather than a shop. Around 10 euros does it. The neighbourhood is one of the city's most expensive, but the market flattens that: people arrive from the surrounding streets, buy something and stand about eating and talking until the stalls come down. It is less a market with food than a standing appointment the whole quarter keeps.
