Café Belga occupies the ground floor of the great art déco Flagey building in Brussels, and functions as the collective living room of the Ixelles neighbourhood. The terrace spills across the square and holds, in any given hour, students, families, people working from a laptop and people who have been coming for twenty years. The food is café food and honest about it, croques, tartines and the soup of the day at around 12 euros, which is rather the point: nobody comes here for a meal so much as for a place to sit. It stays open through the day, so a coffee, a lunch and a late drink can all happen in one visit.
