The read// why locals go

The Ubiquitous Chip has occupied its cobbled courtyard on Ashton Lane since 1971 and did as much as anyone to invent modern Scottish restaurant cooking in Glasgow. Before the Chip, Scottish produce was something restaurants quietly apologised for; it opened insisting the country's beef, game and seafood belonged on a serious menu, and the West End food culture followed. The setting still does heavy lifting — a plant-filled, glass-roofed courtyard off a lane of bars, with a pond, a mezzanine and half a century of accumulated Glasgow history. Mains run around £28 in the main restaurant. Graduations, anniversaries and first dinners home from abroad all end up here.
