The read// why locals go

Pelikan has stood on Blekingegatan since 1904, a Södermalm beer hall where Stockholm's traditional kitchen never went out of fashion. The dining room is a preserved piece of early-century Stockholm, and the menu has stayed just as loyal to it: gravlax, pickled herring, meatballs — husmanskost cooked the way the city's grandparents would recognise. Prices sit at the affordable end, which is rather the point; this is a place people eat at on ordinary weeknights, not one they save up for. The lunch special in particular is why the long tables stay full. More than a century in, it remains one of Södermalm's genuine institutions.
