Capa na Baixa
Porto, Portugal
The read// why locals go
Capa na Baixa has been serving Porto since 1972, and its francesinha is the reason most people cross Praça de Dom João I to find it. Four brothers of the Fontes family opened the house, and the francesinha recipe — sauce included — has stayed inside it ever since. The rest of the menu runs on charcoal: prime cuts over live fire, alongside the beef rissóis regulars are unreasonably devoted to, and a calendar of Portuguese standards that rotates by the day, from duck rice to tripe. The building was reworked in 2016 without losing its character, and it hides something rare downtown — a planted, daylit interior garden, in a restaurant seating well over a hundred.
