Tasca do Chico is a fado house first and a tasca second — live fado every night, Portuguese home cooking on the tables in between. There is no stage and no programme: singers step up out of the crowd, the room falls silent, and the guitarra takes over. The food is the traditional Lisbon repertoire — bacalhau, caldo verde, pastéis de nata — priced around €20 and served without ceremony, because the music is what people came for. It is small, packed and unpolished, which is the setting fado was written for rather than the concert-hall version sold elsewhere in the city.
