Britannia and Co. has held the ground floor of Wakefield House in Ballard Estate since 1923, one of the last Irani cafes still trading in Mumbai. The berry pulao is what most tables come for: basmati rice layered with slow-cooked meat and scattered with sharp dried barberries brought from Iran, a dish that belongs to Parsi-Irani cooking and almost nowhere else. The room keeps the shape every Irani cafe shared, tall ceilings and long rows of plain tables, and it works the lunch trade of the surrounding offices. Plates come in around INR 450.
