The read// why locals go

Zur Letzten Instanz has been serving food on Waisenstraße since 1621, which makes it the oldest restaurant in Berlin and one of the few buildings in the quarter to have come through the twentieth century intact. The menu is unreconstructed Berlin — Eisbein, Berliner Leber, sauerkraut — cooked correctly and served in portions sized for a hard winter, with mains around €22. The name means 'the court of last resort', a nod to the courthouse nearby, and the tiled stove and wooden booths have outlasted every regime that ate around them. Napoleon is said to have been a guest.
