Café Louvre
Prague, Czech Republic
The read// why locals go
Café Louvre opened on Národní třída in 1902 and has been Prague's grand café ever since — Kafka and Einstein both passed through it. The first-floor room is the reason to climb the stairs: high ceilings, long windows over the boulevard, and a billiard hall still in use at the back. The kitchen does Czech classics alongside a proper café menu, and it works hardest at breakfast, when the tables fill with people from the surrounding offices and the university rather than with visitors. The regime closed it in 1948; it reopened in 1992 and picked up more or less where it had left off.
