The read// why locals go

Maha’s Cafe brings scratch-made Egyptian brunch to Queen Street East in Toronto, cooking the sweet-spiced dishes of Cairo the way a family kitchen would. Head chef Maha Barsoom opened the Leslieville room in 2014 alongside Monika Wahba and barista Mark Wahba, and it is still the family’s only location. The kitchen’s own promise is food made from scratch, exactly as you would taste it in Egypt: the Cairo Classic with Egyptian falafel, the Pharaoh’s po’ boy, and a red lentil soup sold by the one-litre mason jar. The Michelin Guide has singled out the Cairo Classic and Toronto Life called it a contender for the city’s best — recognition for what remains a small, independent neighbourhood favourite.
